AMD Gains Forces NVIDIA to Cut Prices

Submitted by: KnightMare @ 02:12 PM | Saturday, November 15, 2008 | (url: http://www.digiti...)

With AMD making gains in the discrete graphics card market rising to around 40% in third-quarter 2008 according to a recent report from Jon Peddie Research (JPR) Nvidia is planning to cut its graphics card prices in an attempt to curb further loss of market share, according to sources at graphics card makers.

AMD anticipates taking 50% of the market after reducing prices for its ATI Radeon HD 4000 series products, but to counter Nvidia has also made moves to cut prices for its GeForce GTX 200, 9800 GT and 9600 GT series.

'The Witcher' Sells Over One Million Units

Submitted by: KnightMare @ 01:51 PM | Sunday, November 2, 2008 | (url: http://www.1up.co...)

CD Projekt RED has announced good news for fans of The Witcher. Not only has epic RPG sold over 1 million units in the past year but if you look closely at the trailer posted above, you will notice what appears to be not only new "unknown" footage featuring our anti-hero Geralt from The Witcher, but other games in development from CD Projekt RED as well.

The company sure has a nice way of thanking their fans too, as just a few weeks ago they released The Witcher: Enhanced Edition, a rerelease full of major upgrades that were provided to existing players for free. Granted, you had to start your game over again, but that was a small price to pay for the new content. According to Michal Kicinski, co-founder of CD Projekt, they are just getting started:

Yahoo to Lay Off Over 1,000 Employees

Submitted by: KnightMare @ 01:01 PM | Monday, October 20, 2008 | (url: http://tech.yahoo...)

ahoo plans to announce significant cost cuts, including layoffs, possibly as early as Tuesday when the troubled Internet firm announces its third-quarter results, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

The newspaper, citing "people familiar with the matter," said that the exact number of jobs to be cut was not clear but it would be more than the 1,000 jobs the Sunnyvale, California-based company announced it was cutting in January.

The newspaper said some managers in Yahoo, which had 14,300 employees as of the end of June, had been asked to identify operating budget cuts of around 15 percent.

Yahoo has been losing ground on the Web to companies such as Google, MySpace and Facebook, and was the target earlier this year of a failed takeover bid by US software giant Microsoft.

Far Cry 2 to include Spore like DRM

Submitted by: KnightMare @ 10:32 AM | Friday, October 17, 2008 | (url: http://www.1up.co...)

Surely you remember the hoopla caused by Spore's piracy protection -- even Electronic Arts head John Riccitiello wasn't happy with it. Well, get ready to encounter some similar restrictions next week with the PC version Far Cry 2. According to Ubisoft Forum Master "bukowski113," the PC version of the upcoming FPS will contain the same digital rights management courtesy of SecuROM. Luckily though, it will contain a few tweaks giving users a bit more freedom with their installs.

You have five activations on three separate PCs.

Uninstalling the game "refunds" an activation. This process is called "revoke," so as long as you complete proper uninstall you will be able to install the game an unlimited number of times on three systems.

The first week since launch over 500,000 new players have registered for fantasy MMORPG, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (WAR), in North America, Europe and the Oceanic territories. EA's most highly pre-ordered PC title, WAR has now become the fastest-selling new MMO of all time.

""In just one week we have a half a million people playing WAR online, and the ranks of Order and Destruction are growing at a record-breaking pace for a new MMORPG," said Mark Jacobs, co-founder and general manager of Mythic Entertainment. "We spent years working to provide players with the most stable, epic, and polished online world we could, but it is the players that have truly brought the Age of Reckoning to life."

World of Warcraft creator Blizzard has won $6m (3.36m) in damages from the makers of a software 'bot'.

The damages award comes after Blizzard won the first round of its legal battle against MDY Industries in July 2008.

Blizzard embarked on the case against MDY claiming that the World of Warcraft Glider software produced by the small company infringed its copyright.

The Glider software lets Warcraft players automate many of the repetitive steps the game involves.

Steam to Begin Supporting Source Mods

Submitted by: KnightMare @ 01:17 PM | Monday, September 29, 2008 | (url: http://storefront...)

As a part of our continuing efforts to support the MOD community, we will begin hosting selected MODs directly on Steam starting next week. The first five MODs to ship on steam will be Age of Chivalry, D.I.P.R.I.P., Insurgency, Synergy, and Zombie Panic. As always, owners of any Source game will be able to download and play all of these MODs for free.

Once installed, these MODs will appear in your "My Games" list and will receive automatic updates just like other games on Steam. Also, these MODs now take advantage of Steamworks, which provides stat tracking and tighter integration with the Steam community.

EA sued over Spore DRM

Submitted by: EspoMan @ 02:52 AM | Saturday, September 27, 2008 | (url: http://www.gamesp...)

The suit accuses EA of "intentionally" hiding the fact Spore uses SecurROM, which it alleges is "secretly installed to the command and control center of the computer (Ring 0, or the Kernel) and [is] surreptitiously operated, overseeing function and operation of the computer, and preventing the computer from operating under certain circumstances and/or disrupting hardware operations." The suit also claims the SecurROM takes over a portion of the PC's processing resources "to transmit information back to EA."

ET- Quakewars MOD: Tribal Wars

Submitted by: Arcanox @ 06:03 PM | Sunday, September 21, 2008 | (url: http://www.twars....)

The project's working title is Tribal Wars, and it is a total conversion mod for Enemy Territory Quake Wars. The fundamental game play aspects are built around Starsiege: Tribes, but this project intends to develop additional elements that would spill over from the project's parent title Enemy Territory - Quake Wars.

We're working towards Milestone 1 in the project which will consist very much of a Tribes LT like experience, and simplified inventory stations. Subsequent milestones may include a larger selection of weapons, armor and tactical elements, many of which may be borrowed from Quake Wars.

I hope you guys like what you see, there will be more posted on the blog in the future.
